Enabling long-term sustainability improvements and behaviours at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust
Since 2019, ETL has supported Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to drive environmental and social sustainability across its existing and developing estate through the development of a strategic Green Plan that drives sustainable development and carbon reduction commitments, whilst addressing feedback received from the staff sustainability survey.

ETL’s Sustainability Team undertook a full review of the Trust’s performance to date. This included undertaking an emissions baseline review, working with a range of stakeholders to undertake a Sustainable Development Assessment and setting ambitious, measurable benchmarks and targets for various elements of Trust activities.
Additionally, ETL developed a bespoke corporate induction presentation for the Trust to use at monthly induction for all new starters – this outlines the Trust’s commitment to sustainability and how staff can engage with the Trust sustainability programme. ETL also created sustainability maps which the Trust shares with staff, patients and visitors with the aim of encouraging active travel and sustainable behaviours that improve efficiency, health and wellbeing.
Through continual engagement and exceptional project delivery, ETL has built and maintained a strong relationship with the Trust’s Estates and Facilities Team and continues to support them in realising their sustainability ambitions.
Most recently, our Sustainability Team supported the Trust to apply for grant funding as part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) from BEIS. ETL led the funding applications for both the Low Carbon Skills Fund (LCSF) and PSDS and worked with onsite contractors to identify energy efficiency and carbon reduction opportunities across their sites.
