<h3>The opportunity </h3>
Following discussions with the Greek Ministry of Health in 2017, SNF announced its intention to fully support a series of infrastructure projects to enhance the health sector in Greece, with a budget expected to reach $1bn. 
These projects are planned to support the transformation of the Greek health system and its journey towards an integrated healthcare system. They include the SNF General Hospital of Komitini, the SNF University Paediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki and the SNF General Hospital of Sparta. Once operationally commissioned, these facilities will be novated to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
Healthcare Strategy and Planning Associate <a href="https://www.lexica.co.uk/people/deirdre-foley-woods">Deirdre Foley Woods</a> led the strategic planning including population health, demand and capacity planning, development of models of care based on the local and regional need, operational model, and clinical and functional design briefing. It is the ambition of SNF that these hospitals will become model hospitals for Greece and beyond.

<h3>Our approach</h3>
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) is one of the world’s leading private international philanthropic organizations, offering grants to non-profits in arts and culture, education, health and sports, and social welfare. In 2017, it announced a new health initiative to expand its support of the health sector in Greece and abroad.
A grant of $500m is allocated to funding three brand new hospitals in Greece: the SNF General Hospital of Komotini, the SNF University Paediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki and the SNF General Hospital of Sparta.
Scheduled for delivery by 2025, the state-of-the-art public hospitals will be located in the underserved healthcare peripheries of Greece. They are envisioned to bring a new standard of public healthcare in Greece and expand access to equitable, universal and quality medical care for all.
We are proud to have delivered a programme of works for SNF. Our team has provided strategic healthcare planning to support not only the hospitals’ design, but also the development of models of care based on local and regional population needs. 
Together with internationally renowned architects Llewelyn Davies and Renzo Piano, we designed people-focused, sustainable facilities with nature at their core. Our joint vision was for the hospitals to foster a quiet, relaxing environment for patients and their relatives, but also for doctors, nurses and all staff. All three sites will adhere to the highest standards of energy efficiency and employ natural light and ventilation throughout. Our health planning expertise integrated leading practices into the hospitals’ functional briefing.<h3>Our impact </h3>
Lexica worked directly with the Greek MoH and local health authorities on behalf of the client, developing workforce planning and organisational structure reform together with a suite of supporting operating policies. 
We ensured that the workforce plan we put together was underpinned by new ways of working and that it was fully supported by organisational governance, so that the hospitals could become a leading benchmark of excellence for healthcare providers both nationally and abroad.
These were subsequently enacted into law, demonstrating the commitment and resourcing by the MoH for these facilities to operate as successful hospitals, capable of promoting education and training, with a world-class reputation, and attract internationally renowned medical consultants, technical specialists and research staff.
One of the client’s key challenges was ensuring that the principles and changes required for the efficient and sustainable operation of the facilities were fully adopted following novation to the Ministry of Health.
SNF University Paediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki is set to become Greece’s first dedicated children’s hospital outside Athens. Located on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, it will offer all key clinical services, from emergency and surgical specialties, to cardiology, haemodialysis, and oncology, as well as neonatal and paediatric intensive care. A dedicated building adjacent to the hospital will also house anew Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
SNF General Hospital of Komotini will replace the ‘Sismanogleio’ General Hospital of Komotini, built in 1937, currently one of the oldest hospitals still in operation in Greece. It will serve as a hub for secondary public health care, collaborating with a network of local healthcare centres across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The building will be surrounded by a densely forested area and therapeutic gardens open to staff, patients, and families.
SNF General Hospital of Sparta will extend access to quality public healthcare to patients in Sparta, the prefecture of Laconia, and the wider Peloponnese. It is set to include specialties such as cardiology and urology, as well as gynaecology, paediatric and critical care units. A collocated adult mental health unit will also be placed here, with its own private facilities and outdoor spaces. The wide range of state-of-the-art medical facilities available on-site will reduce the patients’ need for transfers to Tripoli, Kalamata, or Athens for high-dependency care.
